Butterhead lettuce belongs to leaf vegetables, which are an increasingly important group of plants in the daily diet of Poles. It is a variety of head lettuce - similar to iceberg. It has delicate, light green leaves. As the name suggests, butter lettuce goes well with bread. It is also successfully used as an ingredient in salads.
It is often transported and stored without removing the roots, which prevents the leaves from wilting prematurely - much more tender than romaine or iceberg lettuce leaves. Most likely, this vegetable comes from the regions of the Mediterranean.
Butter lettuce is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and vitamins A, B, C, and K. This type of lettuce may contain milk juice (Lactucarium), a natural sedative. For this reason, the butter variety was once used in European herbalism to treat insomnia and aid digestion.
